3 Powerful Methods For Overcoming Your Fear Of Public Speaking

Public speaking is something that most people will have to deal with at some stage in their life.

Like it or not, there is a good chance that at some point you will get asked to stand up and say a few words at a wedding, or in business.

For 80% of people this is a terrifying thought. Just the simple act of having to present yourself to an audience can make your heart skip a beat and your legs turn to instant jelly.

This doesn’t have to be the case though, if you focus on these powerful steps that can help you overcome your fear of speaking to a crowd.

1)      Take a deep breath-You’ve probably heard this before and it may sound really obvious, but you would be amazed how many people fail to do this before they begin their speech. Taking  a deep breath immediately gets more oxygen to your blood and lungs, this means your heart doesn’t have to work as hard, which allows your whole body to relax. When your body is more relaxed, you feel more comfortable, and you are able to present yourself better.

2)      Use your hands-A common problem with people who fear public speaking is that their hands shake uncontrollably. I remember when I used to struggle with this, I would realize my hands were shaking, and as a result that would become my focal point. I would start to lose track of where I was in my presentation and would feel like everyone was laughing at me because my hands were shaking like jelly. Has this happened to you before? By using your hands through positive gestures, you won’t even notice if they are shaking. People won’t be able to see if your hands are shaking because you will be moving them around in a confident positive manner. For example, if you say something like “And we felt that was a really positive move”…make a first with your right hand and shake it around. This hand gesture matches your statement about positivity and will captivate your audience’s attention.

3)      Get help-This is by far the biggest step you can take towards overcoming your fear of public speaking. There are literally thousands of courses out there that will give you public speaking tips and lessons on how to become a master at this craft. I should know, as I used one to overcome my fear.
