The Hall Branch Library, located in historic Bronzeville, was named in honor of Dr. George Cleveland Hall, a renowned surgeon, social activist and civic leader who was the second African American to serve on the Chicago Public Library Board of Directors. The Hall Branch opened to the public on January 18, 1932, under the direction of Vivian Harsh, the first African American librarian in the Chicago Public Library.

During the 1930’s and 40’s Hall Branch served as a meeting place for young writers such as Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Arna Bontemps, Zora Neale Hurston and Claude McKay.

The library’s rich history is displayed on its walls through black white photographs of its staff, writers and visitors.

Claudy Chapman, a participant and Facilitator with The International Black Summit wanted a way to continue the conversation here in Chicago between Summit events. His intention is to expand the conversation by:
1) getting together with Summit participants on a regular basis,
2) inviting others who may not have attended any Summit event, such as Forum grads and other like-minded individuals, and by
3) having everyone share movies, books, games, audio and video materials which may have similar topics and themes as the Summit.

It’s being called the Summit Service Station because many people who have attended the International Black Summit say they go there to get replenished and plug into that energy, similar to the manner in which we take our car to the gas station pump to refuel it.

Here’s what we’re looking to do at the Summit Service Station:

  • HAVE SOME FUN!!!
  • Engage in insightful, provocative conversations, and
  • Train ourselves in the use of the Summit distinctions in our lives.
