The weather’s GREAT.  Mom baked the cupcakes and cake loaves before I got here.  Some have even been delivered.  What’s left is to find suitable containers for the loaves and get them wrapped for delivery.

The transmission on their van has been leaking fluid.  So it’s been in and out of the shop.  Daddy took it back in this morning and left it.  That makes the 2nd time it’s been left since I’ve been here.  The other two times he took it and brought it back home.

For some reason, I’ve been sneezing and my nose is running.  That hasn’t happened for several years and initially that was due to Cat Allergy.  (When they first moved here they had a cat named SQUEEKY.  I couldn’t stay at their house when I came to visit.  I stayed with my Aunt who lived about 10 minutes away.  After the cat died, we had to wash down their entire house with Ammonia water and later spray with Febreeze Anti-microbial.)

And since I was creating Holiday Greetings to send out from No Out There, I decided to put something together for them to send to our family .  Here it is.  ENJOY.

Southwest AirlinesNO SHOW  Tonight, Wednesday, December 16th
This is just are reminder.  I announced it on the show last week.  I’m enroute to Arizona for the Holidays.
For those of you keeping tabs, this year Mom requested I bring  1). a garden hose, the rosemary bush at the front end of the driveway wasn’t getting enough water.  According to Mom, the maintenance crew isn’t worth a nickel; 2). the large Scrabble “Official Tournament and Club Word List” book  (which was a gift from me last year); 3). two packages of Lemon Jello (according to Mom  Jello is SKY HIGH in Arizona), 4). 2-3 of my canning lids – just the flat part.  Mom bought 3 lbs of jalapenos and ran out of lids, and 5). the two containers of cooked Collard Greens from the freezer.
Did I honor her request?  YOU BET I DID!!!  My brother and I packed everything in their black 21″ expandable carry-on bag which I had borrowed when I made the return trip to Chicago in November.

Mama & Daddy enroute home to Arizona 10-09

We didn’t manage to get out of Chicago until 11:15am Saturday morning Oct 10th.  Usually Mom has us on the road by 6:30am!
 
She had received a call from her friend Ruby’s daughter, informing mom that Ruby was in the hospital.  She’s a 92-years-of-age teacher friend and colleague of mom’s.  Ruby had been taken to the hospital Thursday evening complaining of chest pains.  (She had told me the previous Friday that she had been awake all night due to chest pains and was going to see the doctor about them on Monday – apparently she didn’t.)
There was some discussion as to whether we were going to go ahead and leave or wait until Sunday to leave.  After Mom spoke with Ruby and discovered they were only keeping her overnight, Mom determined we would continue on and she’d keep in touch with Ruby by phone.

Mom hadn’t cleaned out her fridge or freezer and there were several things left to pack into the van.  I helped get the frozen foodstuffs down to the basement freezer and the other things upstairs to my fridge while Mom washed down the shelves.  (We share a 2-flat apartment building.  They occupy the 1st floor, my brother and I the 2nd.)

She, Dad and I made, I don’t know, 4-5 trips back and forth? And then we were FINALLY packed and in the van!!!
 
The drive through Illinois was largely filled with listening to the weekend Glen Beck, Shaun Hannity, Kim Komando, Dr. Bob Adell (?), etc.  I like to keep up with those folks.  Occassionally, we holler at the radio because we disagree with what’s being said.  (I’m being politically correct here)
 
The fall scenery driving through Missouri was spectacular, green, brown, orange and golden yellow foliage, blue skies sprinkled with cotton-candy type clouds – nice crisp air – WONDERFUL!
 
Even though we had put it on ice in the ice bucket, the left-over fruit smoothie Mom made Saturday morning before we left Chicago, exploded early Sunday AM in the motel room while we were sleeping.  (We shared the room,)  So she and I, Mom insisted, were washing down the walls, jackets , sweatshirts, Daddy’s hat and orthopedic stocking at 4am Sunday morning!!!  I couldn’t stop laughing.
 
Dad, who was still lying in the bed, was wise-cracking, he asked, “What was in that drink?  Are you still gonna’ drink it?  If it’s exploding, what’s it doing in your stomach???”  I was holding my sides laughing because I had heard the explosion and thought it was the ice, in the ice bucket, cracking and melting.  Neither one of them heard a thing over Mom’s SNORING!!! LOL!
 
When Dad finally did get out of bed, he pooted with every step on his way to the bathroom – OMG!  Thank goodness I didn’t smell a thing.
 
They both got back into bed and went back to sleep while I worked on this e-mail and the blog.  Of course, once I lay down, they got up and began getting dressed.
 
We ate a GREAT BIG Breakfast at Shoney’s next door and were still laughing about the fruit smoothie that blew up.  We figure something had begun to ferment.
 
When we stopped for gas later I looked for the SoBe Energy Drink I like to use for these trips, because unlike the other trips, this time I am doing ALL of the driving.  In the past Dad has driven about 2 hours worth.  The first year I assisted, ALL of us participated with the driving.  With Dad having the knee replacement surgery the past two years, his participation has been limited.

Mom announced, to no one in particular the morning we were leaving, “I’m not going to drive anymore.”  Dad and I looked at each other and burst out laughing because Mom hasn’t done any of the driving for years!!!  When she realized why we were laughing, she smiled and began laughing too.

 

After we left Oklahoma, as SOON as we crossed the state line into Texas, there was some VERY HEAVY and DENSE FOG with intermittent rain on the I-40 West to Tucumcari.  The 1610Am Information Radio Station, said visibility was 1/2 mile.  It was more like 1/2 block.  Mom is chirping in, “It was more like 200 ft.”

When we got to Amarillo, I decided to exit for a bathroom break – I had had enough of driving through the fog.  While we waited for Dad, I called The Golden Dragon Restaurant in Tucumcari to find out what time they closed.  That restaurant is the MAIN reason we stop in Tucumcari in the 1st place.  Mom likes their Shrimp Egg Foo Young!  They now close at 4pm on Sunday’s!!!  It was 6pm.  Oh well.

Back on the road and NO MORE FOG the entire drive to Tucumcari.  LOA?

celebrate 60 Years of Marriage

My mother sighed the other day saying, “September used to be such a nice month.  Now it’s not anymore.”

I know her sigh was about MORE than the 9/11 national tragedy that this day has come to commemorate.

  It’s also about the fact that her 3rd child, my only sister, Debora was cremated on Sept. 11th 10 years ago.  She passed September 8, 1998.   And THIS September 8th, we buried my sister-in-law Debra’s, father.

So, I have a HUGE request for those of you reading this, please do me a favor:  assist me in acknowledging my parent’s phenomenal achievement, 60 years of marriage, especially in this day and age, by going to the Chicago Tribune’s Announcement page and offering your CONGRATULATIONS!

It doesn’t have to be much, it could even be one word of: WOW, Congratulations, What an Achievement, U ROCK or something to that effect would be GREAT!

My Mom likes to give advice so you can even ask her (and Dad too) how they did it!

Dad’s been up here already this morning looking for his cane.  He tells me Mom has a new project: to get the refrigerator my brother is putting out and replacing the two mini-fridges they’ve been using.  She’s also decided to get the exhaust for the stove working up here and THEN to complete the projects for the 1st floor!!!  (She hasn’t told me about this yet – I’m waiting.)

Projects for the 1st floor include: removing the siding from one wall in the kitchen, removing the plaster down to the lath, putting up plasterboard, replacing the siding, getting the exhaust working for the new microwave and I think that’s about it.

Friday evening we moved the gas stove to the back porch, turned off the gas feeder to that stove, and arranged for the Salvation Army to pick it up.

Yesterday, Saturday, we moved the electric stove from the 1st floor to the second, moved the electric stove from the van (we brought the stove with us from Arizona in the back of the van – no Uhaul!).

Oh yeah, Mama wanted the refrigerator moved today.  My father told her she was nuts!
